What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a tool you can talk to in plain English. You type a question or instruction, and it writes a helpful response. It can draft emails, brainstorm ideas, explain things, summarise text, and much more.

Think of it like a very knowledgeable assistant who is always available — but you should always check its work before using it.

How to access it

  • Go to chat.openai.com in any web browser
  • Create a free account (email address is all you need)
  • Start typing — no installation required
A free plan is available. Some advanced features require a paid subscription, but the free version is enough to get started and learn the basics.

Asking vs instructing

A question gets you an answer. An instruction gets you a useful, specific result.

Question: "Can you help with marketing?" → General, vague answer. Instruction: "Write a short Facebook post for my plumbing business about boiler servicing." → Specific, usable result.

Always review the answer

ChatGPT can sometimes get things wrong — especially facts, prices, dates, and legal details. Always read through what it produces and change anything that isn't right before using it. It's an assistant, not an expert.

Try it now (2 minutes)

Open ChatGPT and type: "Suggest five ways ChatGPT could help with my type of business. I run a [your business type]."

Replace [your business type] with what you actually do — for example, "painter and decorator in Newport". Read the five ideas. Which one could you try this week?
